Responsibilities: Art Director, additional design

Hours of War was a free to play WWII-themed browser-based multiplayer game striving for historical accuracy, where thousands of human players could replay epic battles. Player took the role of one of the commanders, fighting alongside and against of up to thousands of human players in World War II campaigns and scenarios such as Allied landing in Normandy 1944, the Soviet mass offensive against the Finns at Tali-Ihantala 1944 and more. Player could choose from scenarios ranging from few hours up to massive campaigns lasting weeks or months.

Hours of War reached open beta, where around 20-30 players would fight out smaller scenarios in real-time battles lasting for 1-2 hours. Development was unfortunately stopped as the company failed to secure further financing to finish the game.

My responsibilities included creating and maintaining the visual identity of Hours of War-game and leading the user interface design and art team.

Sample game views

Above and below: User interface with a clean, clear basic skin designed for Alpha release. Screen would scale based on size of the browser window. Both images show tactical level combat (used for issuing commands to units), image above with 3D units on, image below with unit buttons styled after traditional board strategy games.

Below: A skin with a second world war look. Image below shows the strategic level view, used for commanding other players.

Game illustrations

Visual style of the game was largely inspired by old war comics and traditional board-based strategy games. Borrowing from these sources added a nostalgic, even comical tone to the otherwise gloomy, serious undercurrent of the game. Players in our core target gropu would immediately feel at home, as many spent their youth with such entertainment. Visually, comics would supply colorful eye-candy to the often graphics-wise humble genre of hard-core strategy gaming.
