Johnny Crash and the sequel Johnny Crash does Texas were critically acclaimed mobile games for Java-enabled mobile phones, based on an innovative one-button game play.

Games told a satirical story about a teenager who had watched too many reality television shows and wanted to become a star by performing human cannonball stunts. Deceptively simple but highly addictive gameplay carefully balanced balance of skill and luck.

I worked as a lead artist and character designer for the series and actively participated in the design process. Games also formed an integral part of my Master“s Thesis on game character design (University of Art and Design Helsinki, 2007). I also held a presentation about the games in Game Developers Conference Mobile (San Jose, 2006).

"It is an early morning and you drag your home made cannon to the roof. You know what you are doing. Nobody will laugh at you anymore. Are you ready to overcome your fear and blast your career to a grandiose start?

Your goal as Johnny is to perform crazy stunt flights as a human cannonball. Fly inside a thunder cloud and be electrocuted by a lightning or find yourself from the middle of a bird flock. Or maybe you need a haircut - trim your hair with helicopter blades!"

Critical praise for Johnny Crash-titles
Johnny Crash

"The simple gameplay is extremely addictive, and more so because you're consistently trying to beat your highest score on the various stunts. Dangerously good."
- Mobile Choice (9.0, Game of the Month-award)

"Johnny Crash's unique concept and its simple, enjoyable gameplay are exactly what mobile needs."
- Gamespot.com (8.3)

"Johnny Crash's one-button gameplay is extremely simple and refreshing... Sumea gets a lot of mileage out of [the concept] by infusing the game with character and tight control. This is a great release for DChoch - it delivers on the kind of promise the company had a year ago."
- IGN.com (8.4, Editor's Choice-award)

Johnny Crash Does Texas

"Johnny Crash is one of mobile's few mascot candidates, and he would probably serve in that role admirably. Indeed, his youthful insouciance and dramatic flair make him quite the spectacle. Johnny Crash Does Texas' considerable additions - namely, its combo system, navigation system, and colorful setting - represent marked improvements over the storied star's last adventure, and they help make it one of the very best and most unique games for mobile."
